Antibiotics in our life
15 Dec. 2013

Nowadays there are many points of view concerning antibiotics – when to take antibiotics, are they dangerous for our health or not – and quite often they can be mutually exclusive. Some people think that antibiotics are very harmful, they suppress our immunity, causedysbiosis; therefore, one should avoid taking antibiotics by all means and let the body cope with the illness. Others consider antibiotics a cure-all remedy that should be taken every time you fall ill and have even a slightest fever. So let’s speak about antibiotics in detail and try to strike a compromise.

First of all, antibiotics should be taken only for bacteria caused infections, this type of drugs is ineffective against viruses. It’s important to know that the processes of body cells life activities are fundamentally different from those of a bacterial cell. Antibiotics have a selective action on the life activities in bacteria cells;they suppress these activities but do not affect the processes in human body cells. That’s why currently known antibiotics are classified on the basis of their mechanism of action and chemical structure. Thus, some antibiotics suppress the synthesis of bacterial membrane – a structure that is completely absent in human cells. antibioticThe most important among such drugs are antibiotics belonging to the groups of penicillins (Amoxil, Flopen), cephalosporins (Cephalexin) and some other drugs. Other antibiotics inhibit various steps of protein synthesis in bacteria cells – these are drugs belonging to the groups of tetracyclines (Doxycycline), macrolides (Erythrocin, Biaxin, Zithromax), aminoglycosides (Amikin), nitroimidazoles (Flagyl).Antibiotics differ considerably in their basic feature – antibacterial activity.

The instruction for each antibacterial drug contains the list of bacteria which are sensitive to this drug, the so-called spectrum of activity. Some antibiotics affect many types of bacteria (Amoxil, Zithromax, Flagyl, Doxycycline), others – only certain types of bacteria (Polymyxin). Unfortunately, there has not been invented such drug that could suppress the life activity of both bacteria and viruses, because the differences in structure and metabolism of these microorganisms are fundamental. But in whole the discovery of antibiotics is considered to be one of the greatest and most important events in the history of medicine. Antibiotics are a very powerful means in fight against severe, previously untreatable infections.
