Can You Get Pregnant While on Birth Pills?
1 Aug. 2014

birth control pills1Birth control pills were first introduced in early 1960s and since then became the most popular contraception method, used by over 100 million women worldwide. As a rule, these are combination pills that contain hormones – estrogen and progesterone – to prevent ovulation. Pregnancy cannot occur without ovulation as there is no egg to be fertilized. Pills also assist in thickening the mucus around the cervix making it difficult for the sperm to reach eggs and making it difficult for the egg to attach to the wall of the uterus.

However, experience has proven that oral contraceptives cannot protect couples from unwanted pregnancy one hundred per cent. In the course of a year, 8 out of 100 women receiving birth control pills may have accidental pregnancy. Why does it happen, how to avoid this and, what is the most important, what to do with the unintended pregnancy?

You can get pregnant while on birth pills if:

• You have just started taking the pills and do not use additional backup form of contraception. This should be done during the first menstrual cycle. In subsequent cycles there is no need for additional contraception.
• You have missed taking the pill for more than 12 hours, the chances of getting pregnant increase considerably.
• The contraception method is chosen improperly. For example, when you receive pills indicated to nursing women. Such contraceptives contain fewer hormones, so the probability of getting pregnant is very high.
• In less than 3 hours after taking the pill you had a stomach upset, vomiting or diarrhea.

There are also many other things that may interfere with birth pills efficacy. Most important among them are concomitant conditions and use of other medications, especially antibiotics, anti-fungals, antispasmodic drugs, and even herbal supplements. These medications reduce absorption of contraceptives in the intestine or speed up their decomposition in the liver, which leads to contraceptives’ efficacy decline. Therefore it is important to inform your doctor about taking birth pills before administering any medicines to you. It is possible that you’ll have to use other contraceptive methods during the course of treatment.

Alcohol consumption is also worth mentioning. As far as alcohol also makes liver work faster (it quickly removes toxins and at the same time neutralizes estrogens contained in contraceptive pills), large doses of spirits prevent pills from inducing ovulation.

If, after all, pregnancy occurred, there is no reason for worry concerning its safe outcome. Years-long statistics shows that the number of developmentally disabled children born under such circumstances is not bigger than average. Thousands of healthy kids born this way are a satisfactory evidence for this. Therefore, the fact of receiving birth pills mustn’t influence your decision on whether to keep or abort the baby. Gynecologists do not consider birth pills intake to be a contraindication to conception that took place while on oral contraceptives, as the hormones amount in them is not so big to be harmful to future mother and her baby. Pregnancy under such circumstances is considered to be normal.
