Hair Styles That May Cause Hair Loss
23 Nov. 2015

Man-BunThey say loosing around 100 hair strands a day is normal and that the number of hair follicles on the scalp progressively reduces with age. Nevertheless, if you notice clumps of hair falling out, strands of hair sticking on the clothes after combing or styling, and your hairline receding, it is clearly a reason to raise an alarm. And while the most causes of hair loss are hereditary and require separate treatment, such as generic Finasteride, certain hairstyles can also contribute to it.

Here are the 4 most popular and convenient hairstyles that may cause hair loss, and namely traction alopecia.

1. Ponytail. This very common and convenient hairstyle may cause hair loss. When wearing a tight ponytail on a regular basis, the blood flow to the scalp is restricted causing damage to hair follicles.  Ponytails cause frontal and parietal hair loss. Other symptoms may involve itchy scalp, headache and hair breakage around the scalp.

2. Man bun. The hair style started in Europe by David Beckham and recently followed by some celebrities as Leonardo DiCaprio and Jared Leto, produces the same effect on the scalp and hair follicles as the ponytail. Wearing it for 4 to 6 weeks continuously, especially if the bun is slicked back too tightly, putting unnatural pressure on the hair, may lead to horseshoe alopecia in the center of the scalp.

3. Cornrows. Originated from Africa, this hairstyle became an extremely popular look among people of all age groups, including celebrities as Ludacris, Sean Paul and Justin Timberlake.  In this hairstyle, hair is braided too close to the scalp, creating certain scalp tension and scaring it. This may cause marginal or central alopecia, especially if cornrows are kept for long. Moreover, when not cleaned properly, there may develop bacterial and fungal infections which may promote formation of bald spots.

4. Dreadlocks. Bob Marley, Whoopi Goldberg and Lenny Kravitz look chic with their dreadlocks, though this hairstyle has a set of disadvantages. Over a period of time the hair becomes twisted, tangled and knotted.  This may cause dandruff, hair loss and other scalp conditions.

Hair loss due to hairstyle might go unnoticed for a while, but once bald spots begin to appear it may be late to bring the hair back. A return to normal is impossible in those who have early male pattern baldness or who have developed scarring from prolonged traction. In order to prevent it, make sure your hair is tied back loosely.

Still, there might be more to blame than the styling pattern. Anyone who experiences hair loss should consult a dermatologist, who will properly diagnose the condition and figure out a treatment plan according to the type of hair loss.
