How to Cope With Irregular Menstrual Cycle

Setting a dateMenstruation can last from 3 to 7 days, and menstrual cycle can range from 21 to 35 days. The duration of menstrual cycle and menstruation itself are an individual characteristic of a female body, so they vary from woman to woman. We can talk about menstrual irregularities (irregular periods) when the biological process happening in the female body designed by the nature is disturbed:

•    During her period a woman is losing less or more blood than usual;
•    The time between the periods starts changing;
•    The number of days that periods last vary from period to period.

Menstrual irregularities can be a sign of hormonal imbalance in the body of a woman. The function of the female reproductive system is controlled by the hormones of the thyroid gland, ovaries, adrenal glands and pituitary-hypothalamic system. Hormonal imbalance can result from:

•    Persistent psycho-emotional stress;
•    Nervous system disturbance;
•    Diseases of various origins of the reproductive system and other internal organs;
•    Use of some medicines;
•    Poor and unhealthy diet.

Sometimes menstrual cycle can be disturbed due to serious diseases:

•    Malignant and benign tumors of the uterus or ovaries;
•    Ectopic pregnancy;
•    Polycystic Ovary Syndrome;
•    Hypothyroidism.

Quite often menstrual irregularities can be linked to the dysfunction of the endocrine glands, liver and the blood coagulation system.

Taking into consideration all the above said, the first thing a woman should do if she faces irregular periods is to see a gynecologist and have a thorough medical check-up. Usually the regulation of the menstrual cycle and treatment of menstrual irregularities may involve:

•    Treatment of the underlying disease
To diagnose such disease a woman should take blood tests in order to check thyroid function and hormone levels.
•    Lifestyle changesyoung woman at the gynecologist
They include reducing the levels of stress by using relaxation techniques, sticking to a healthy diet, avoiding overexercising and losing excess weight as weight gain can interfere with menstrual cycle. However, keep in mind that sudden weight loss can also lead to irregular periods.
•    Changing birth control method
Some women can have irregular periods when they use such birth control method as intrauterine device (IUD).
•    Hormone therapy
It involves taking estrogen and progestin medications.
•    Surgery
Sometimes structural problems or scarring in the fallopian tubes or uterus may cause menstrual irregularities and surgery can help correct these problems.
