How to Prevent Hair Loss When Losing Weight?

Normally hair grows ½ inch per month for 2 years and then goes to its resting phase. On overage we lose from 50 to 100 strands of hair daily. However physical and emotional stress from dieting can cause more hair than usual to go into the resting phase and fall out. Nutritional deficiencies due to dieting can cause hair to prematurely enter the resting phase.

There are different types of obesity and different diets for people struggling with their weight. However, the aim of all the diets is to reduce the total body mass due to the loss of fluid, body fat and lean mass. As a rule this can be achieved by exercise and reduction in caloric intake. Dietary restrictions oftentimes lead to nutritional deficiencies that can cause hair to prematurely enter the resting phase.

No matter what manner you use to lose weight, be it exercising, dieting or taking weight loss pills,  the more weight you lose, the more likely you are to experience some hair shedding. In order to prevent hair loss when losing weight it is necessary to:

1. Make sure your restrictions are sensible. While you do need to restrict calories when losing weight, restricting too much can result in hair loss as the body doesn’t have enough energy to support the hair growth. It is advised to multiply your target weight by 10 to get your ideal daily calorie limit.

2. Create a balanced diet. Foods rich in protein and omega-3 fatty acids promote hair growth. By including whole grains, ground flax seeds, dairy, salmon and leafy green vegetables into your diet, you’ll be able to lose weight in a nutrient-rich way.healthy eating

3. Supplement your diet with vitamins and minerals. Vitamin deficiency, especially lack of vitamins A, B, C, D and E, can weaken the hair follicles and not allow hair to grow. Minerals, especially zinc, iron and magnesium are also essential for hair growth. You may try vitamin and mineral combination supplements specially formulated for hair.

4. Avoid extreme diets. Fasting or yo-yo dieting often restrict the intake of particular food groups whereas all food groups are vital to health. Removing certain foods from your diet completely will limit access to nutrients necessary for hair growth and retention. Better use lipase inhibitors such as Xenical to prevent absorption of dietary fat and promote healthy weight loss. It is advisable to lose no more than 2lbs per week to avoid the risk of hair loss and other health problems.
