Beta-blockers – this type of drugs works by slowing down the heart rate and reduces the load on the heart muscle so the blood is pumped through the blood vessels with lesser force and the blood pressure is lowered.
ACE inhibitors – these medications reduce the production of a hormone called angiotensin II (it causes the blood vessels to constrict). Since ACE inhibitors decrease the level of this hormone in the body, the blood vessels remain relaxed, the blood flows more easily and the blood pressure is lowered.

Thus, changes in a lifestyle and regular exercises, giving up smoking and reducing alcohol consumption are very useful and can reduce the risk for a hypertensive crisis. People suffering from high blood pressure should also reconsider their diet – it’s better to reduce the consumption of sugar, salt, fatty foods and coffee as well as give up fast foods. There are certain products with blood-pressure-lowering effect such as those rich in potassium (soy beans, tomato sauce, spinach, lentil, raisins, sweet potatoes) and magnesium (bran, brown rice, almond, hazelnut, milk, spinach).

All in all, the treatment of high blood pressure is a complex process that involves medications and changes to many spheres of the patient’s life.
