Which Is More Effective: Finasteride or Dutasteride?
3 Apr. 2015

avodart - propeciaAndrogen blockade is one of the most popular treatments for men with male pattern baldness. The blockade through the use of Finasteride or Dutasteride reduces the amount of androgen that circulates in the scalp and results in less androgen converted to dihydrotetosterone from the enzymatic deficiency that exists. The enzyme which is responsible for conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone is 5α-reductase. Dihydrotestosterone attaches itself to hair follicles and causes them to shrink, preventing new hair growth.

Both agents work in similar way to combat hair loss, though there are some differences. The major difference is that Finasteride is approved by the FDA for hair loss treatment, whereas Dutasteride is approved only for treating enlarged prostate. Another major difference is that Finasteride inhibits only the type 2 5α-reductase, while Dutasteride inhibits both types of enzymes – type 1 5α-reductase and type2 5α-reductase. As a result, Dutasteride is more effective in reducing dihydrotestosterone levels in the body, that is by 90% compared to 70% reduction with Finasteride. In men with benign prostatic hyperplasia, treatment with either agent results in similar prostate gland volume reduction.

This ability of Dutasteride to lower dihydrotestosterone levels more than Finasteride makes Dutasteride also more effective for hair regrowth.  A study conducted by the Duke University Medical Center showed that 2,5 of Dutasteride was more effective for increasing hair count than 5 mg of Finasteride. Though, Finasteride has fewer sexual side effects.Hair Loss

One more difference between these two agents is the length of time they remain in the body. Finatseride stays in the body for one day, whereas Dutasteride can remain in the system for several months. Therefore you shouldn’t expect immediate effect from Dutasteride for hair regrowth and should wait for about 6 months for the drug to take effect. Moreover, you shouldn’t donate blood until at least half a year after your last Dutasteride dose to prevent the transfusion to a pregnant woman.

To sum up, both are good drugs. However remember that Finasteride has more clinical data and efficacy for male pattern baldness in medical literature, while Dutasteride might be more efficacious at higher doses. And as far as sexual side effect profile appears to be better with Finasteride, it should be the 5α-reductase inhibitor choice.
