Choosing the Right Drug for ED

Erectile dysfunction is the most common sexual dysfunction in men along with premature ejaculation and lack of interest. It affects almost half of men aged 40 to 70 to some degree and nearly 1 out of every 10 men has an incomplete inability for sexual intercourse.

Medical treatment for ED includes counseling, oral therapies and surgery. Depending on the motivation, every man can recover his ability for satisfying sexual intercourse. Even though there is still no magic treatment that could restore the natural sex function men remember from their youth, the development of oral medication for impotence is one of the biggest advances in men’s health ever. And while some men need to combine different approaches, almost 2/3 of men get significant improvement with oral medications alone.

According to erectile dysfunction statistics, taking an ED drug produces an erection sufficient to start and have a full-fledged intercourse in almost 70% of men. Does this mean that there is no difference in which ED drug to take? This is not so. Very often doctors advise their patients to try different ED drugs to see which work best in them.

As a rule, Sildenafil Citrate is the first drug doctors prescribe, since it has been long on the market and its pharmacokinetics is well studied. The drug doesn’t cause erection directly, but enhances it where there is sexual stimulation. The onset of action begins within an hour after its intake and the effect lasts up to 4 hours. It has shown 80% effectiveness in men with difficulty maintaining erection, though the success rate is lower in diabetics and patients who have undergone prostate or bladder surgery. At the same time, some men are unhappy with its short-term effect. If this is the case, your doctor may recommend another ED medication.

Tadalafil is a worthy alternative to Sildenafil. It is considered the most long-acting ED drug (up to 36 hours) with the quickest onset of action (within 20 minutes). Moreover, different types of Tadalafil, such as chewable tablets, make it an easy-to-use remedy. Better still, it is the best bet to have sex more than once a day.

In some cases, the main challenge in choosing the best ED drug is its cost. In such a case you may consider generic ED drugs, which are not less effective than originals, but are less expensive.

There is a multitude of treatment choices available today to assure each patient has a successful outcome. Make sure to exhaust all ED drug options before moving on to the next line of treatment.
