Aldactone is a mild diuretic and antihypertensive remedy with antiandrogen and progestogen properties, which also exerts estrogen and glucocorticoid effects. It is prescribed for congestive heart failure, liver cirrhosis, kidney disease, water retention, hypertension and hypokalemia. The 100 mg tablets, are administered once or twice daily.

What is Aldactone?
Aldactone tablets contain Spironolactone, which is an antiandrogenic agent and as such is used to treat conditions caused by increased levels of androgens, specifically aldosterone. It is administered to patients who suffer from hirsutism, acne, seborrhea, and sometimes male pattern baldness. The drug also has a diuretic, potassium-sparing effect and is prescribed to treat hypokalemia, hypertension, congestive heart failure, and edema.
What are the indications for using Aldactone?
The drug is usually used to treat the following diseases:
Hyperaldosteronism, the abnormal increase in the aldosterone hormone level which may lead to a number of unwanted conditions.
Edema, fluid accumulation in body tissues which may be caused by kidney disorder, liver disorder, or congestive heart failure.
Hypertension. Diuretics are usually prescribed to patients who suffer from this condition, and as a potassium-sparing diuretic Aldactone is a good way to normalize the blood pressure while not leading to excessive loss of potassium.
Hypokalemia, the condition when the levels of potassium in the blood are below the norm. Potassium is important for nervous and cardiovascular system functioning, and its deficiency can lead to a number of serious conditions.
What is the dosage of Aldactone?
The drug is supplied in form of tablets for oral use, ranging from Aldactone 25 mg to Aldactone 100 mg. When used for treating of diagnosed hyperaldosteronism, 100 mg to 400 mg of the drug is taken daily as recommended by the doctor. For edema treatment, the recommended daily dose ranges from 25 mg to 200 mg and is adjusted according to each patient’s response. Aldactone may be used along with other diuretics as well if that is considered necessary. If the drug is used for hypertension therapy, 50 mg to 100 mg are taken daily; the drug’s dosage may be adjusted according to response of the patient, or it can be used with other antihypertensive drugs. A dose of the drug that ranges from 25 mg to 100 mg daily is recommended for hypokalemia treatment.
What are the contraindications for using Aldactone?
The drug is not to be used by patients with kidney dysfunction, anuria, and hyperkalemia.
What are the adverse effects of Aldactone?
Patients taking Aldactone may experience frequent urination, drowsiness, rashes, loss of libido, irregular periods, and breast tenderness. Most of the effects are temporary and of low severity, but be sure to check with your doctor if any of these worsen or bother you significantly.
