What is Baclofen?
Baclofen is an oral drug that can be used to treat spasticity and muscle spasms. The chemical for Baclofen is 4-amino-3-(4-chlorophenyl)-butanoic acid. Whether the muscle spasms are caused by an injury in the spinal cord or by multiple sclerosis, Baclofen can effectively relieve the pain by relaxing the muscles. It is especially effective in bringing relief from muscular rigidity, concomitant pain, flexor spasms, and clonus. Baclofen can also be an effective treatment for people with a spinal cord injury or with some other spinal cord disease.
What are the indications for using Baclofen?
Baclofen is often prescribed to individuals suffering from multiple sclerosis or some form of spinal cord injury. Such conditions can cause painful and frequent muscle spasms that can be effectively reduced and relieved by Baclofen. This medicine is given to those with reversible spasticity as Baclofen can help restore health and residual function. It cannot treat muscle spasms that result from rheumatic disorders.
What is the dosage of Baclofen?
Baclofen tablets come in dosages of 10mg and 20mg. The dosage is determined by the medical condition the individual has and by other factors. In the majority of cases, the patient needs to start with a minimal dosage, and gradually increase it over time, until the desired effect is reached. The minimal dose is 5 mg. It should be taken 3 times a day with or without food for 3 days. Then the dosage should be increased to 10mg (for 3 days), then to 15 (for 3 days), and so on until optimum effect is reached. It is usually somewhere between 40mg-80mg a day. The dosage should not be more than 80mg a day. It may take from 1 to 2 or more months to reach maximum benefit from the Baclofen drug.
What are the contraindications for using Baclofen?
Baclofen should not be taken by children under 12 years of age. It may also be unfitting for people with epilepsy (or another seizure disorder), kidney disease, or those with a history of stroke or blood clots. If you have any of those conditions, consult with the doctor. It is currently unknown whether Baclofen affects pregnancies and whether or not it can pass into breast milk. Baclofen may also increase the risk of developing a cyst in the ovaries.
What are the adverse effects of Baclofen?
Baclofen has been known to cause weakness, headaches, nausea, constipation, and trouble sleeping. Side effects such as mood changes, depression, and hallucinations are symptoms of a more serious side effect. So, if you experience any of these, consult with your doctor right away. Serious allergic reactions to Baclofen are relatively rare, but they exist. If you notice a rash, severe dizziness, trouble breathing, or swelling, a doctor or pharmacist should be notified right away.
