What is Cardizem?
The active component of the drug is diltiazem hydrochloride, a calcium channel blocker that helps mitigate the symptoms of angina by relaxing the blood vessels, slowing down the heartbeat rate and relaxing the heart muscle so that it contracts with less force. It results in the decrease in the amount of oxygen the heart needs and in enhancement of the blood supply of the heart muscle, which helps to effectively remove the symptoms of angina.
What are the indications for using Cardizem?
The medication is mainly indicated for treatment of angina pectoris, otherwise known as angina or heart pain. The condition is caused by insufficient oxygen supply of the heart muscle due to atherosclerosis or spasms of coronary arteries. Chest pain usually develops after exercise or other physical activities and disappears at rest – a condition which is called stable angina. Cardizem is also used to treat heart pain caused by coronary artery spasm.
What is the dosage of Cardizem?
Cardizem oral tablets are supplied with strengths ranging from 30 mg to 120 mg. 30 mg of the drug taken four times a day is the recommended starting dose for angina treatment. The initial dose is then increased each day until the best therapeutic response is achieved for each particular patient; the optimal total daily dose is less than 360 mg.
What are the contraindications for using Cardizem?
The drug is not recommended for use in patients with a heartbeat disorder caused by SA node disease (sick sinus syndrome), as well as in patients with other heart block conditions. The use of an artificial pacemaker may allow administering the drug to such patients. The drug is also contraindicated in patients with hypotension and those with hypersensitivity to the medication’s components.
What are the adverse effects of Cardizem?
Among some of the few reported side effects of Cardizem use are headache, nausea, dizziness, hypotension, rash, constipation and edema. Most of these are just temporary inconveniences that should not bother most patients. Serious side effects are rare among patients who take the drug, however, don’t hesitate to contact your health care professional in case any of the conditions worsen after the use of the drug.
