What is Celebrex?

The key ingredient of the preparation is Celecoxib, which works by inhibiting the COX-2, an enzyme responsible for pain and inflammation. Other additives of the preparation are croscarmellose sodium, gelatin, magnesium stearate, lactose monohydrate, sodium lauryl sulfate, povidone and edible inks. The drug is marketed by Pfizer and is available in capsule form.
When is Celebrex indicated?
Celebrex is primarily used for arthritis symptoms treatment, including pain, swelling and stiffness. It is prescribed for osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and rheumatoid spondylitis. The drug is also applied to eliminate pain during menstruation period in women and to reduce rectal and colon polyps in patients suffering from familial adenomatous polyposis.
What is Celebrex dosage?
Celebrex dosage will vary according to the particular disease. To relief osteoarthritis symptoms the drug is administered in a dose of 200 mg o.d. or in two divided intakes of 100 mg b.i.d. To relief osteoarthritis symptoms, take 100 mg – 200 mg b.i.d. For rheumatoid spondylitis the treatment is started with 200 mg o.d. and if no progress is observed in 6 weeks, the dosage is up titrated to 400 mg o.d. For acute pain or painful menstruation the initial dose is 400 mg, which can be followed by another 200 mg if necessary. In subsequent days take 200 mg b.i.d. if necessary.
What are Celebrex side effects?
In general Celebrex is well tolerated by majority of patients. Its side effects are mild and may include abdominal pain, indigestion and diarrhea. Less frequent side effects are headache, heartburn and constipation. Seek immediate medical assistance if you develop allergic reactions like hives, trouble breathing and swelling of lips, tongue, throat or face.
When is Celebrex contraindicated?
Celebrex is contraindicated to patients with hypersensibility to celecoxib, aspirin or other NSAIDs as well as to sulfonamides. It shouldn’t be taken by patients with a history of urticaria, asthma or congestive heart failure. Avoid using the drug in late pregnancy. The drug may interact with other chemicals, such as fluconazole, lisinopril and some diuretics. Discuss all possible drug interactions with your pharmacist to avoid unwanted sequelae.
