What is Coreg?

Coreg (Carvedilol) is a drug that is applied to treat heart problems and abnormal blood pressure. It belongs to a group of drugs called beta-blockers. Beta-blockers are the agents whose action affects beta receptors. These receptors are prevalent in the cells of the heart, arteries, kidneys and muscles, and the main task of beta-blockers like Coreg is controlling the function of heart muscles and tissues, regulating blood pressure. Thus, Coreg has proved to be a very effective drug in regulating heart function and blood circulation.

What are the indications for using Coreg?

Coreg is recommended for treating the following conditions:

Congestive heart failure – a dangerous condition within the body, which occurs when the heart pumps weaker and is unable to supply sufficient blood throughout the body. The most common symptoms include shortness of breath, swelling of legs, and overall weakness.

High blood pressure – a condition connected with the heart, characterized by a blood pressure level elevated beyond the norm. This puts great strain on the heart and leads to both long-term and short-term adverse effects if left untreated. The short-term repercussions include headache, vertigo, lightheadedness, altered vision, and tinnitus. However, long-term effects, such as heart disease, artery disease, chronic kidney disease and stroke also tend to appear.

What is the dosage of Coreg?

Coreg comes in the form of 3.125mg, 6.25mg, 12.5mg and 25mg tablets. When treating heart failure, the optimal starting dose is 3.125mg two times per day. If tolerated by the body and accepted by the doctor, this dosage can increase up to 25mg. The recommended dose for treating hypertension is twice that of heart failure, constituting two doses of 6.25mg a day. The tablets best function if they are taken with food, as the rate of absorption is slowed and orthostatic effects are lowered.

What are the contraindications for using Coreg?

While Coreg is an effective drug, it can have a very negative influence when taken with other drugs or under certain medical conditions. To clarify, patients with sick sinus syndrome, severe bradycardia, severe hepatic impairment, cardiogenic shock, AV block, and bronchospatic conditions should avoid Coreg as it can worsen their condition. Patients taking CYP2D6 Inhibitors, hypotensive agents, Digitalis Glycosides, Cyclosporine, Amiodarone, insulin and several other drugs shouldn’t take them with Coreg.

What are the adverse effects of Coreg?

Possible side effects include fatigue, dizziness, hypotension, weight gain, diarrhea, asthenia and bradycardia.
