Generic Imuran 25mg

Generic Imuran 25mg online

Imuran is an immunosuppressive agent; it is administered together with other drugs to the patients who have had an organ transplant (kidney, heart or liver) in order to prevent possible rejection of the transplant. It works by reducing the activity of the immune system. This medication can also be prescribed for the therapy of autoimmune diseases in which immune system reacts against the body, like chronic hepatitis, severe rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, etc.

The active component of Imuran is azathioprine, an immunosuppressant prescribed to prevent the rejection of a transplant in people who have undergone an organ transplant surgery. Being an immunosuppressive agent, it does not let the body reject new transplant. In the case of the diseases caused by the pathologic reaction produced by the immune system against body's own tissues (rheumatoid arthritis), Imuran reduces the inflammation associated with the immune reaction.

What is Imuran?

Imuran, also known as Azathioprine, is an immunosuppressive antimetabolite. This drug was developed and released to the public in 1957, and since that time, has remained a top choice for immunosuppressive drugs in dozens of countries all over the world. This is a prodrug, meaning that it lacks active substances but is activated by the body itself, and is most commonly used to treat autoimmune diseases, though it is also approved in many cases of organ transplantation.

What are the indications for using Imuran?

Imuran can be used to treat the following conditions and diseases:

  • Rheumatoid arthritis – a disease that causes the inflammation of many tissues and organs, but usually affects the joints in the hands and feet.
  • Crohn’s disease - a bowel disease affecting parts of the gastrointestinal tract. It causes vomiting, diarrhea, weight loss, pain, and sometimes leads to harsher complications.
  • Lupus erythematosus – a class of autoimmune diseases in which the immune system begins functioning incorrectly and attacks healthy body tissues in joints, blood cells, lungs, kidneys, skin, and the heart.
  • Eczema – an inflammation of skin associated with a number of skin conditions like rash, dryness, and crusting patches.
  • Multiple sclerosis – an inflammatory disease that leads to the destruction of the brain and spinal cord nerve cells. In turn, this disrupts the ability of the nervous system to function properly.

As mentioned previously, Imuran is also often taken after organ transplantation. This prevents the rejection of the transplanted organs.

What is the dosage of Imuran?

Imuran comes in the form of tablets that are taken orally, but the dosage depends on age, underlying medical condition, and other factors. When treating arthritis, the dose should be 1 mg per kilogram taken once or twice a day, depending on your doctor’s orders. In organ transplantation, the dose should be 3-5mg/kg every day.

What are the contraindications for using Imuran?

It should not be taken by patients that have shown hypersensitivity to Imuran, pregnant women, and patients previously treated with alkylating agents.

What are the adverse effects of Imuran?

Adverse effects for this drug may include leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, anemia, vomiting, nausea, and several other adverse effects which happen very rarely.
