What is Lincocin?
Lincocin is an antibacterial drug that prevents the development of harmful bacteria by stopping their ability to synthesize proteins necessary for their growth and replication. It is administered as an intravenous or intramuscular injection. It is a powerful antibiotic that is usually reserved for treatment of severe infections where the use of traditional antibiotics is inappropriate for various reasons.
What are the indications for using Lincocin?
This medicine is used to treat severe bacterial infections caused by a broad spectrum of susceptible bacteria from the genera pneumococci, staphylococci, and streptococci. To prevent undesirable side effects and make sure the unnecessary use of antibiotic drugs does not lead to development of drug-resistant bacteria, Lincocin should be used exclusively to treat conditions caused by susceptible microorganisms and when the alternative antibiotics are unsuitable.
What is the dosage of Lincocin?
When used in the form of intramuscular injection, 2 ml/day is the usual dose of the drug. In some cases the dose may be increased to 2 ml every 12 hours. For children the daily dose is calculated as 0.03 ml/kg; in severe cases the dose is increased to 0.03 ml/kg every 12 hours. If Lincocin is used as an intravenous injection the dose is determined by severity of the condition and ranges from 2 ml per 12 hours up to a maximal daily dose of 26 ml. The drug is available in 2 ml and 10 ml doses; 1 ml of the solution contains 300 mg of the active component.
What are the contraindications for using Lincocin?
The drug cannot be used by patients with hypersensitivity to lincomycin and other lincosamide antibiotics. The patient’s gastrointestinal disorders, liver and kidney problems, and allergies to the drug’s components should be taken into consideration before prescribing the medication.
What are the adverse effects of Lincocin?
The use of this drug may cause diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, headache, or dizziness in some patients. In case of prolonged diarrhea make sure to contact your health care professional, as it might signal the development of a form of colitis reported as a possible adverse effect of Lincocin use.
