What is Maxalt?
Maxalt (or Rizatriptan in scientific terms) is a triptan medication intended to alleviate symptoms of migraines.  The development of Maxalt and other triptons like it (naratriptan, zolmitriptan, rizatriptan, sumatriptan, almitriptan) began in 1972 when a team of researchers began looking to create a new kind of medication. The research went well, and the first triptan medicine was produced and distributed in the 90’s including Maxalt in 1998. Since then, the drug has earned itself a good name as an accessible and affordable way of treating headaches.

What are the indications for using Maxalt?
Maxalt is suitable for consumption for adults and children from 6 to 17 years of age. It’s quintessential to note that Maxalt must only be taken after a diagnosis of migraine has been set, otherwise using it might be fruitless or even inhibitive. Maxalt works by narrowing the blood vessels found around the brain as well as ridding the body of substances that are known to cause headaches. Though it is a good form of treatment, you should remember that Maxalt doesn’t prevent headaches or reduce their number in any way.

What is the dosage of Maxalt?
For children, the dosage depends on body weight. Patients weighing less than 40 kg should take a 5mg dose while those over 40 can take 10mg. For adults, both 5 mg and 10 mg doses are suitable. Maxalt should be taken orally by adults no more than 3 times a day, and 1 time a day for children.

What are the contraindications for using Maxalt?
Proper care should be taken when taking Maxalt with other drugs. To clarify, patients taking Maxalt are not recommended to superpose it with Ergot-containing drugs, 5HT1 Agonists, SSRI’s, SRNI’s, and Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors. The dosage of Maxalt should be adjusted when taking Propranolol.

What are the side effects of Maxalt?
Side effects reported in some cases of taking Maxalt include the following: sweating, hypersensitivity, diarrhea, hypertension, sinusitis, dyspnea and others.
