What is Mestinon?

Mestinon (Pyridostigmine) is a popular drug for treating muscle weakness, though it has several other uses which will be outlined below. It comes in the form of oral tablets, which contain the active substance pyridostigmine bromide. Mestinon works by prolonging the activity of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter responsible for the correct transmission of nerve signals to muscles. Thus, the drug greatly improves the contraction and loosening of muscles within the body.

What are the indications for using Mestinon?

Mestinon is predominantly used in the following cases and conditions:

  • Myasthenia gravis – a disease that causes muscle weakness and disease. These symptoms can worsen and multiply with time if not treated correctly
  • Orthostatic hypotension – a condition under which a patient’s blood pressure rapidly drops after the person suddenly stands up. Though it may occur in people of all ages, it is especially common amongst the elderly, who are also the most affected by it.
  • Chronic axonal polyneuropathy – an inflammatory disorder that can cause nerve damage of all forms, having a truly destructive effect on the life of the patient involved.
  • Postural tachycardia syndrome - is a major spike in the heart rate after changing one’s position or posture. Not only does this disrupt homeostasis, it also produces a range of unpleasant symptoms.
  • Urinary retention – difficulty urinating. This is only applicable if the patient has recently been operated on.
  • Paralytic ileus – paralysis of the intestine, a very dangerous condition known to create extreme pain and discomfort.

What is the dosage of Mestinon?

The appropriate dosage of Mestinon should be established by your doctor. These oral pills are usually taken once or twice a day, with no less than six hours in between. Mestinon can be taken both with and without food, yet the pill itself should be swallowed with some water.

What are the contraindications for using Mestinon?

This drug should not be used by anyone who is suffering from obstruction of the intestine and urinary tract. Special care must also be taken if the patient is pregnant, suffers from diabetes, alcohol dependence or liver disease.

What are the adverse effects of Mestinon?

Conducted studies have demonstrated incidences of the following adverse effects: vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, sweating, cramps, and other minor symptoms.
