What is Myambutol?

Myambutol (Ethambutol) is a drug used for treating tuberculosis. It is a bacteriostatic drug, meaning that its main effect lies in preventing bacteria from reproducing. It is also antimycobacterial, which means that its use is limited to fighting mycobacteria. Myambutol’s mechanism of action starts when it is absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract, after that, it spreads to bodily tissues, blocks the formation of a cell wall and inhibits enzymes connected with bacterial reproduction.

What are the indications for using Myambutol?

Myambutol is considered to be one of the top drugs for treating tuberculosis. Tuberculosis is an infectious disease that has plagued mankind for centuries. It is caused by Mycobacteria, which usually settle in the lungs. Mycobacteria are small bacteria that replicate slowly but are easily spread through the air. Though infection by Mycobacteria is usually random, there are certain factors that encourage infection. The category of the population most susceptible to tuberculosis are the HIV-positive, but other factors such as malnutrition, overcrowding, diabetes, alcoholism and chronic lung disease can all have a big influence too. The most common symptoms of tuberculosis are chest pain, coughing, chills, weight loss and fatigue in the initial stage, with the patient’s condition worsening significantly if left untreated.

What is the dosage of Myambutol?

Myambutol should be taken together with other tuberculosis drugs, as its effect alone is not sufficient for treating such a dangerous illness. Myambutol is sold in pills of 400mg, 600mg, 800mg and 1000mg, and the dosage is determined by the patient’s body weight. The recommended dose is 15mg per kilogram every 24 hours.

What are the contraindications for using Myambutol?

The first limiting factor of Myambutol consumption is age. Anyone under thirteen must not take this drug as it puts their health at least. Furthermore, anyone allergic to the drug or its ingredients, as well as anyone with an inflammation of the optic nerve would do well to avoid Myambutol. As far as drug interactions go, Myambutol’s effect has been proven weaker when taken with aluminum hydroxides.

What are the adverse effects of Myambutol?

Different studies have yielded different results, but the most widely-documented side effects are decreased visual capacity, arthralgia, hepatoxicity, color blindness and peripheral neuropathy.
