What is Nexium?
Nexium belongs to a category of drugs called proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) and it is used to block the production of gastric acid by the stomach. Proton pump inhibitors are mainly used to treat such conditions as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), stomach and duodenal ulcers, and the Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, which are all caused by gastric acid. Nexium acts by blocking enzyme that produces the acid. When the enzyme is blocked, the production of acid decreases allowing the stomach and esophagus (the tube between the throat and the stomach) to heal.

What are the indications for using Nexium?
Nexium is used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease, a condition, during which backward flow of gastric acid causes heartburn and possible injury of the esophagus (also known as the gullet). Although your stomach can usually deal with powerful chemicals concentrated in the acid, the delicate mucous layer of the esophagus can’t. If GERD remains untreated it can lead to tissue damage in the esophagus lining evolving into erosive esophagitis.

What is the dosage of Nexium?

For GERD treatment, 20 or 40 mg of esomeprazole should be administered once a day for the period of up to 8 weeks. For children ages 1 – 11 the daily dose is between 10 and 20 mg. Nexium comes in delayed release (long lasting) capsules and packets. Each capsule contains 20 or 40 mg of esomeprazole while each packet contains 2.5, 5, 10, 20, or 40 mg of esomeprazole. The enteric-coated granules located in both the capsules and packets can be given through a feeding tube.

What are the contraindications for using Nexium?
Nexium is contraindicated in patients allergic to esomeprazole or any benzimidazole medications including albendazole, or mebendazole. Patients with severe liver disease should consult their doctor before taking Nexium.

What are the adverse effects of Nexium?
People using proton pump inhibitors are more likely to develop osteoporosis-related fractures due to long term use (1 year or more) and high doses. Therefore it is recommended to use the lowest doses possible and the shortest duration of treatment required for the condition being treated. Other reported side effects include headache, constipation, dry mouth, gas, rash, and itching.
