What is Parlodel?
The drug’s active component is bromocriptine mesylate, one of the so-called dopamine agonists. This substance can help normalize the conditions caused by excess of certain hormones in the body, such as hyperprolactinemia and acromegaly. It also helps patients with Parkinson’s disease. In cases when hyperprolactinemia, an excess of prolactin hormone, is caused by a pituitary tumor, Parlodel has demonstrated the ability to shrink these tumors effectively.

What are the indications for using Parlodel?
Parlodel is mainly prescribed to patients with one of the following conditions, alone or along with other treatments: hyperprolactinemia symptoms, such as amenorrhea, galactorrhea, infertility, and hypogonadism, as well as acromegaly and Parkinson’s disease. The drug can be used to treat the usual cause of hyperprolactinemia, a type of a brain tumor, to reduce its size before other treatment methods are applied.

What is the dosage of Parlodel?
This medication is available in tablets with 2.5 mg bromocriptine mesylate, as well as capsules of 5 mg. For hyperprolactinemia treatment, the daily dose of Parlodel usually starts from one 2.5 mg tablet. The dose then increases by one additional tablet each several days up to 15 mg daily until the best therapeutic result is achieved. For acromegaly treatment, the initial dose is one 2.5 mg tablet per day; it is increased gradually to achieve the optimal results. The usual dose is 25 mg/day, while the maximal dose should not be more than 100 mg/day. For patients with Parkinson’s disease the dose is similarly gradually increased for optimal therapeutic response.

What are the contraindications for using Parlodel?
Parlodel is contraindicated in patients with hypertension disorder, patients with history of heart disease, sensitivity to bromocriptine mesylate, as well as in pregnant or nursing patients. Parlodel therapy might be still recommended by your doctor if the positive outcome of the treatment is considered beneficial versus the risk of complications. This medication may interact with some other drugs, so be sure to inform your doctor about any drugs you currently take.

What are the adverse effects of Parlodel?
Some of the side effects that patients taking this medication may experience include: nausea, dizziness, headache, constipation, fatigue, hypotension, and vomiting. If you experience more serious adverse consequences of Parlodel use, talk to your doctor immediately.
