What is Plavix?
Under normal circumstances, platelets help the blood clot when it is necessary, for instance, after an injury. However, when arteries become cramped or narrowed by plaques, platelets often coagulate within the vessels. This can cause severe blockage of the artery and other serious problems. Plavix keeps the platelets from coagulating in your blood to prevent blood clots that occur after a recent heart attack.

What are the indications for using Plavix?
Plavix is prescribed as the means of recovery after a stroke, heart attack, or to patients that have a coronary artery disease to prevent blood clotting. It is also used to treat patients with a high risk of stroke due to cerebrovascular disease – disease of blood vessels that deliver blood and oxygen to the brain. Patients with peripheral vascular disease can use Plavix to treat severe symptoms associated with the condition and prevent the development of gangrene.

What is the dosage of Plavix?

Plavix is usually taken once daily. The recommended dose for treatment of heart attack or unstable angina is a single 300 mg oral loading dose, initially continued by 75 mg/day together with 75-325 mg of aspirin (which should be used with caution by patients with peptic ulcers).  For recent stroke or peripheral disease treatment use 75 mg daily. Since Plavix starts to work after it’s been activated by enzymes in the liver, individuals with reduced activity of liver enzymes may need to use alternative treatments.

What are the contraindications for using Plavix?
You should not take Plavix if you are allergic to any of its components or if you have an active bleeding condition such as a brain hemorrhage or a stomach ulcer. Individuals with a significant cholestatic jaundice (abnormal bile flow in the liver) or a severe liver disease should not use Plavix.

What are the adverse effects of Plavix?
Just like any other drug Plavix has its own list of side effects – some can be managed while others may go away on their own with time. At least 1% of people taking Plavix reported the following side effects: dizziness, vomiting, diarrhea, heartburn, nausea, headache, and joint or muscle pain. If you have any questions about side effects and would like to know more about benefits and risks associated with taking Plavix, please contact your doctor.
