What is Prilosec?
Prilosec’s main ingredient is Omeprazole, one of the proton pump inhibitors. The PPI's act by inhibiting the function of cells in the stomach which are responsible for gastric acid synthesis. This lowers the acid level in the stomach and relieves the symptoms caused by the excess acid’s harmful action on the mucous membranes of the esophagus and/or duodenum.

What are the indications for using Prilosec?
The drug is most efficiently used in patients with stomach ulcer, duodenal ulcer (in combination with antibiotics to also treat the infection caused by H. pylori bacteria), gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), as well as pathologic gastric acid hypersecretion caused by other conditions.

What is the dosage of Prilosec?
Prilosec is offered as oral tablets and suspension for oral use. The doses of active component in tablets range from 10 mg to 40 mg; the suspension version of the drug contains 2.5 mg or 10 mg of Omeprazole. The drug’s dosage varies depending on the type of condition treated and on whether other drugs are used alongside Prilosec. The usual dose for duodenal ulcer treatment is 20 mg/day for one month. When duodenal ulcer is treated with additional antibiotics, the drug’s dose may vary - 20 mg twice a day or 40 mg/day taken once. For treatment of gastric ulcer, 40 mg Prilosec are to be taken for one to two months. When pathologic acid hypersecretion is treated with Prilosec, the dose starts at 60 mg/day and goes up to 120 mg thrice a day, depending on clinical response.

What are the contraindications for using Prilosec?
Allergy to Omeprazole is a contraindication for the drug’s use, as well as liver disease, heart disorder, and other gastrointestinal disorders. Prilosec therapy should be used with caution in patients with osteoporosis or other bone disorders.

What are the adverse effects of Prilosec?
Headache, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, constipation, dizziness and sore throat are among the known side effects of the drug. Severe adverse conditions are extremely rare as a result of taking Prilosec, but be ready to inform your doctor as soon as possible in case you develop a more serious reaction.
