What is Protonix?
Protonix is an oral drug that is often referred to as Pantoprazole. It belongs to the proton pump inhibitor (PPI) group of drugs and is effective in the treatment of some esophagus and stomach problems. It works by decreasing the volume of acid made by the stomach or by blocking acid production altogether. It is able to block the enzyme in the stomach wall that is responsible for producing acid. As a result of the blocked enzyme, acid production is greatly decreased and the stomach and esophagus are able to heal properly.
What are the indications for using Protonix?
Protonix is prescribed to patients who are experiencing esophagus and stomach problems, especially if these problems include symptoms such as heartburn, persistent cough, and difficulty in coughing. Protonix can alleviate these symptoms. Protonix is effective in the treatment of ulcers, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). These are all conditions that are caused by acid in the stomach. Protonix has also been known to help prevent cancer in the esophagus.
What is the dosage of Protonix?
Protonix comes in tablets. The recommended dosage for patients suffering from GERD is 40mg to be taken once a day for 4 to 8 weeks. The recommended dosage for Zollinger-Ellison syndrome is 40mg twice a day. The dosage can be adjusted in correlation with the patient’s specific condition, medical history, and symptoms. For maximum effectiveness, it is suggested that the drug be taken about 30 minutes before a meal. The tablet should be swallowed whole, without being chewed, crushed, or split in any way.
What are the contraindications for using Protonix?
Protonix should not be taken by people who are allergic to it and to similar drugs, such as lansoprazole and omeprazole. It is also not recommended to patients suffering from liver disease.
What are the adverse effects of Protonix?
Although Protonix is usually well-tolerated by the body, it can still cause some side effects. The most common of these are nausea, diarrhea, constipation, vomiting, headaches, and rashes. The less frequent symptoms are weakness, muscle pain, dizziness, leg cramps, and an abnormal heart rhythm. If Protonix is taken for an extended amount of time, it may increase the risk of osteoporosis-related fractures of the wrist, hip, or spine.
