What is Tegretol?
One type of anticonvulsant, Tegretol decreases the nerve impulses which cause pain and seizures. Some of the common nerve pain problems such as diabetic neuropathy and trigeminal neuralgia are treated with Tegretol. Some doctors suggest Tegretol for treatment of bipolar disorder as well.

What are the Indications of using Tegretol?
Tegretol is indicated by the doctors if you are suffering from any of the following:

  • Generalized tonic-clonic seizures such as grand mal.
  • Patients with partial seizures with complex symptomatology such as temporal lobe and psychomotor.  When treated with Tegretol, patients with these seizures have shown better improvement if compared to those suffering from other types.
  • Tegretol is also used for treatment of diseases such as trigeminal neuralgia and glossopharyngeal neuralgia.


What is the Recommended Dosage of Tegretol?
The dosage actually vary depending on the disease to be treated and the health condition of the patient. If you are suffering from seizure disorder, the starting dose for adults should be 100 mg to 200 mg once or twice daily. The dosage can actually go up to 1,600 mg per day depending on the condition of the patient and how he is reacting to the treatment. For treating Trigeminal neuralgia, dosage should be 100 mg per day. Depending on the situation, it can be actually increased to 1200 mg per day. For bipolar disorders and mania, the dosage should be between 200 mg and 400 mg. Try to take Tegretol with meals almost all the time. Tegretol comes in tablet, liquid and chewable tablet forms.

What are the Contraindications for using Tegretol?
You should not have Tegretol in the following cases:

  • If you have a history of bone marrow depression.
  • If you are allergic to any active ingredient of Tegretol or the tricyclic compounds such as imipramine, amitriptyline etc.
  • If you have suffered from acute intermittent porphyria before.
  • If you are suffering from any sort of serious blood disorder.
  • If you are suffering from liver disease or have problem with your heart rhythms.


What are the Side Effects of Tegretol?
Some of the minor side effects of using Tegretol are: confusion, vision problems, fever, swelling, hallucinations, little or no urinating, pale skin, tired feeling, red spots on skin, headache, muscle cramps, dizziness, drowsiness, swollen tongue, dry mouth etc.
However, if you are experiencing any of the following: easy bruising, unusual bleeding, pounding heartbeats, upper stomach pain, dark urine, jaundice, clay-colored stools, it is important to consult the doctor right away.
