What is Zanaflex?

A renowned short acting muscle relaxant, Zanaflex works by blocking the nerve impulses which are sent to your brain causing the pain sensations. This medicine is a centrally acting alpha II adrenergic agonist. Doctors advise to take the same only for daily activities which require relief from any sort of muscle spasticity. You can get immediate relief from muscle tightness, cramp or spasms caused by certain types of medical problems such as ALS, multiple sclerosis, back pain, spastic diplegia or other injuries to the central nervous system or the spine. Doctors even suggest this medicine for migraine headaches and some use it as an anticonvulsant as well.

What are the Indications for Using Zanaflex?

Zanaflex is known to have a short term effect and hence, only if you are facing trouble to conduct your daily activities, you should start using Zanaflex. On the other hand, if you are seeing certain symptoms of fibromyalgia in your body, you can talk to your doctor and start taking Zanaflex. This medicine, in certain times, is used as a sleeping aid for some patients as well.

What is the Required Dosage for Zanaflex?

Zanaflex is available in both tablet and capsule format. The tablet generally comes in 4 mg dosage. The capsules however are available in various dosages such as 2 mg, 4 mg and 6 mg. These should be stored at the normal room temperature, away from any sort of exposure to direct sunlight.

What are the Contraindications for using Zanaflex?

  • If you are allergic to tizanidine hydrochloride, don’t start having Zanaflex.
  • If you are taking any sort of antibiotic ciprofloxacin or antidepressant fluvoxamine, please make sure not to use Zanaflex.
  • If you are already suffering from any of these diseases: kidney disease, low or high blood pressure, liver disease, you should consult your doctor before starting to use Zanaflex.
  • If you have a history of Long QT Syndrome, make sure not to have Zanaflex.
  • If you are already pregnant or are planning to get pregnant in near future, don’t use Zanaflex.

What are the Side Effects of Using Zanaflex?

Some of the most common side effects of Zanaflex are: fever, anxiety, nervousness, muscle weakness, dry mouth, back pain, increased muscle tone, skin rash, drowsiness, tingling, numbness, diarrhea, stomach pain, vomiting, constipation etc. However certain comparatively serious side effects can be experienced as well, such as: nausea, hallucinations, pain during urination, fainting, slow heart rate etc.
