What is Erythromycin?
Erythromycin is an antibiotic that belongs to the group of macrolide antibiotics. These antibiotics substantially slow down or even kill bacteria that are sensitive to it. They do so by decreasing the production of some proteins that are vital for bacteria's survival. Erythromycin is used to treat or prevent some infections caused by bacteria.

What are the indications for using Erythromycin?
Erythromycin is used to treat and prevent bacterial infections. It is effective in treating diphtheria, bronchitis, pertussis, Legionnaires disease, pneumonia, venereal disease, and rheumatic fever. It is also used for treating lung, intestine, ear, and skin infections. Medical professionals sometimes prescribe it to patients before a surgery or serious dental work as it can prevent an infection. It is not effective in treating viral infections such as the flu and the cold.

What is the dosage of Erythromycin?
Erythromycin comes in the form of a capsule, long-acting capsule, tablet, chewable tablet, long-active tablet, pediatric drops (by mouth), and liquid. The most common form of administration is 250 and 500 mg tablets. Doctors recommend it to be taken approximately every six hours for 7-21 days, sometimes longer. The exact dosage depends on the type of medical condition the patient has. When using chewable tablets, the tablets should be chewed or crushed before swallowing. The other tablets and capsules should be swallowed whole and washed down with a glass of water.

What are the contraindications for using Erythromycin?
Erythromycin should not be taken by individuals who are allergic to it or to similar drugs, such as clarithromycin, azithromycin, or dirithromycin. It may not be appropriate for women who are pregnant or breast-feeding, and for those people who have yellowing of the eyes or skin, colitis, liver disease, or stomach problems.

What are the adverse effects of Erythromycin?
Erythromycin has been known to cause some side effects, such as diarrhea, stomach cramps, stomach pain, and vomiting. Some patients experience stomach cramps and a mild skin rash. If any of these are severe or do not go away, see your doctor. Some of the more serious side effects include itching, wheezing, severe skin rash, hives, dark urine, difficulty swallowing or breathing, vaginal infection, unusual tiredness, and pale stool. If you notice these side effects, see your doctor right away!
